Autism is also known as Asperger Syndrome. The more we learn about autism, the more we seem to notice it almost everywhere. Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a very high functioning sort of autism. In current years it has been called “The Little Professor Syndrome” and “The Greek Syndrome” because individuals with AS tend to be articulate, intelligent and socially bewildered.
Recently, there is no one single medical test that will conclusively diagnose adults with autism. Instead, the diagnosis is made on the basis of observable characteristics of the person. The Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) is a clinical diagnostic device for analyzing autism in children as well as adults. The ADI-R is a semi-structured device for diagnosing autism in kids and adults with mental ages around 18 months and above. The device has been proven reliable and to successfully make a distinction of young kids with autism from those with language impairments and mental retardation. ADI-R concentrates on behavior in 3 primary areas and contains at least 111 items that particularly focuses on behavior within the 3 content areas:
Quality of social interaction- for instance, offering, seeking comfort, emotional sharing, responding to other and social smiling.
Communication and language- example, pronoun reversal, stereotyped utterances, social usage of languages and behavior- example, hand and finger mannerisms, unusual preoccupations and unusual sensory interests.
The interview initiates scores in very of the 3 content areas. Accumulated scores indicate problematic behavior. For every item, the disorder analyst provides a score ranging from 0-3. A score of 0 is provided when the “behavior of the type specified is probably present but defining criteria are not fully met”; score of two means “definite abnormal behavior”; and a score of three is kept for “immense severity” of the certain behavior to diagnose autism carefully.
